Introduction

The exciting tropical Latin rhythms are driving Brisbane crowds wild and Salsa in particular is a full mixture of those intoxicating sounds. Salsa music is sensational and dancing it is so exciting you will be hooked.

The exotic Salsa steps are dynamic, stylish and sexy, and therefore so much fun. In response to the demand from Salsa dance students and experienced dancers for more venues in Brisbane, international Latin dancer Rico has founded “Rico’s Salsa Club” Another exciting Salsa Classes program coming up soon. See past seasons and special events. Register for updates and don't miss our new season.

There’s no need to bring a partner and people of all ages are welcome. You learn at your own pace as you come to classes. Rico’s popularity as a teacher comes from his patience and natural talent for both dancing and teaching as well as being fun to learn with. He has developed a successful introductory method to Latin dance movements, which makes it easier for beginners to learn from the most basic steps to very complex dance routines. For the more coordinated, he is always happy to teach those impressive “Caliente” (HOT) steps.

People from all walks of life participate in our Salsa classes. We have had students ranging from ages 12 to 80 attend, people with extensive dance experience and those with absolutely none. Everyone has one thing in common – they’re there to have fun and learn the exhilarating steps of authentic Salsa. It is not necessary to bring a partner to the classes.

Class Details

Salsa classes are conducted in nightclubs, restaurants and other locations. Some of these venues have age restrictions, therefore if you are under 18 it is recommended to call us so we can make arrangements for you to attend.

Beginners: The beginners classes teach you the basics you need to dance the Salsa steps. This class is taught at a slow pace to ensure you learn the correct technique and style of authentic Salsa. It is usually necessary to attend five beginners’ classes before moving on to the intermediate level.

Intermediate: Intermediate level introduces more complex steps that are an extension of those learnt at the Beginners level. The intermediate class also concentrates on improving the style of your Salsa dancing. People progress at different paces and once the teacher feels a student is ready, they will be promoted to the Advanced level.

Advanced: The advanced class is for those students who are comfortable with most of the Salsa steps taught and are committed to developing their Salsa style. Partnering features in this level as well as more complex combination of the Salsa steps learnt in previous levels.

CLASS GUIDELINES

What to Wear

Classes are usually held in nightclubs or similar venues so it is necessary to dress accordingly – neat, comfortable and the appropriate shoes (see below).

Footwear

Footwear is an important consideration due to the nature of the steps involved in Salsa. Sneakers are generally unsuitable, as they tend to grip the floor, making it harder to perform the steps correctly and increasing the risk of injury to ankles and knees. In addition, dress codes of the class venues often prohibit wearing sneakers.

Ladies:
It is advisable to wear shoes with a low heel and heel support
(i.e. preferably no slip-on shoes).
"Appropriate shoes is a requirement to participate in this class"
No rubber sole shoes please.

Guys:
It is best to wear closed shoes with a smooth sole.

No rubber sole shoes please.

Do I need a Partner?

NO! It is not necessary to bring a partner. Some of the steps we teach are performed individually (particularly in the Beginners’ classes) and there is usually an equal number of guys and girls in the event we do partnering work. When we teach partner steps we always ask to rotate partners so that everyone has the opportunity to meet and dance with as many people as possible.

Other things to note

It is advisable to come early so you can relax, buy a drink and ensure your place in the class. New students should also be sure to register themselves with an instructor at their first class. Also, having the right change for the class will make the process quicker, so you can start dancing sooner! The cost for the class is $10.00 per person.

Class Etiquette

While it is the aim of the class to have lots of fun, here are a few points to keep in mind to ensure everyone benefits from the classes.

1 Please keep noise to a minimum when the teachers are instructing – there are often over 30 people in the classes and it is difficult to explain steps when there are people talking. Be as noisy as you like when you are given time to practice during the class.

2 Respect your fellow class members – if someone is having trouble with a step and you know how to do it, you are welcome to help them. Also keep noise to a minimum when classmates are asking questions and don’t interrupt them if they are receiving instruction from a teacher.

3 Respect your dance partner – be patient with them! People progress at different paces and your designated partner may not be able to go as fast as you, or may have trouble with the steps. Only go as fast as they can and help them if they are having trouble. Remember we get everyone to change partners regularly throughout the class so you will have the opportunity to dance with someone more experienced.

4 If you are experiencing problems with the steps or anything else in the class, please bring this to the attention of the teacher who will be glad to assist.
